Piyush: - Yes, tell me, why you people have called me here in the common room? Look, I know that you all are my seniors and I have just taken admission in this college, but that does not mean that you have the license to do ragging with me. My father is a well-known Marwari businessman of this area. So, what? if I have not heard the name of Manna Dey before? You Bengalee people have got one man from your region to get that prestigious award, which is why you are feeling proud. You Bengalees do not have any other singers also.
Arindam:- ei jeh, Mero bhai…aar amra chup kore thaktey parchi naa…let me make it very clear to you that Bengalees are the only people in India who have music, art, culture and spirituality in their blood and wherever they go, they just spellbound everyone with their talent.
Piyush: - Don’t call us by that name ‘Mero bhai’. We don’t like that name. But, Arindam, you must appreciate the fact that Indian economy is growing faster, because we, the Marwaris are expert in doing business.
Reema: - No, Piyush, even non-Marwaris are also doing good businesses. But, side-by-side, I don’t think, Bengalees are too good in music and other related things.
Mrinal: -Have you people ever read the Indian History? Who was Swami Vivekananda? He was the only Indian to rock the public of Chicago at that time. Rabindranath Tagore, what to say about him? Still the ‘Rabindra Sangeet’ rocks during ‘Basanto Utsav’ in Shantiniketan. How can you ignore Satyajit Ray? Go and watch the movie ‘Goopi Gayen and Bagha Bayen’. In that film, there is a ghost dance, where in those times; Satyajit Ray produced some peculiar music, which will even challenge A.R.Rahman today. The tune of ‘Feluda’ and ‘Pather Panchali’ still rocks.
Arindam: - Culturally also, we are the best, maybe, politically, we are the worst, because of that CPI (M) factor. Oh! What about playback singers? Can you produce a 2nd Kishore Kumar, Hemanta Mukherjee and Manna Dey? And you Piyush, the great idiot; have you not heard the song ‘Zindagi kaisi hai paheli haaye, kabhi yeh rulaaye, kabhi yeh hassaye’ of ‘Anand’ film?
Piyush: - Oh!, ya, ya, I have heard that song. That is a nice song. Oho, now I can recollect who Manna Dey is. Yes, boss, he is also a terrific singer.
Mrinal: - Forget about the old days. Today also, our Bengalee singers are rocking like Kumar Sanu, Abhijeet, Shaan, Rupam and other singers of our Bengali rock bands. Not only from Kolkata, but from Dhaka also, superb Bengali rock bands are coming out with their awesome songs. Even Anu Malik is a fan of Fossils and Miles Bengali bands, he he he…Oho, how can I forget the name of Sreya Ghoshal. If Lata Mangeshkar is Don Bradman, then our Sreya Ghoshal is Sachin Tendulkar. Even, as a music director, Pritam is giving lots of super hit songs to the Bollywood Industry.
Arindam: - Boss, these are all about the people. But, even, Bengal has different type of songs as per the regions. If you go to Purulia, Bankura and Birbhum districts, you will find a different style of music. In Midnapore and Sundarban areas, they have their own style. Even the ‘Baaul’ song has rocked the western countries. Go to North Bengal, there the folk songs of hilly areas mixed with some Nepali tones are just superb. Believe me, in Kolkata only, you will get so many talented musicians, that you will get stunned; but the problem is that many of them don’t get motivation to pursue a career in the music industry, whereas in South India, I have seen people are crazy about pursuing career in films or music industry.
Reema: - Ok, guys. We are totally convinced that “BENGAL IS A MUSICAL LAND” and Manna Dey should have got the ‘Dada sahib Phalke’ award much earlier also. Now, please leave me and Piyush. We are feeling like being kidnapped inside this common room, surrounded by all Bengalee people. We, Marwaris are not racial.
Arindam: - Dhaath teri ki…We will never do any harm to you people. We called you here to make you understand about the musical spirit of Bengal. Reema, you have a very sweet voice and you know Bengali very well. Why don’t you sing for our college band as a lead female singer? Please keep my request.
